Following the success of SNL and The Simpsons, Conan was offered the job of replacing David Letterman on The Late Show. The Late Show with Conan O'Brien struggled to find its niche in its first few years. In fact, the show was on the verge of being canceled but there was no replacement for the time slot, so Conan was required to sign a new contract every week. Fortunately for NBC and Conan, the show finally found an audience and grew to be the most watched show for its time slot, with an audience of over 2.5 million weekly viewers.
Conan's quirky and self-effacing style appeals to a wide audience, typically younger than that found for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't know the name Conan O'Brien even though he often jokes about being an unpopular outsider who's still on the verge of cancellation. He is considered by many to be a comedic genius.
